About The High Heel Race

The 17th Street High Heel Race has been a cherished tradition in DC’s queer community for over 35 years, originally starting as a fun wager between drag queens, bartenders, and local community members racing in high heels along queer bars. Officially recognized as a mayoral event in 2018 by Mayor Muriel Bowser, this race has evolved into a citywide celebration of queer culture and creativity, featuring lively performances, an iconic parade, and the fabulousness that defines the spirit of DC.
