About The Panelists

Brian Schaller, Associate Design Principal, HDR

Brian’s 15 years in the AEC industry as a gay professional uniquely position him to speak on the realities of navigating this field. His leadership in co-chairing the Build Out Alliance's Professional Programming Committee and his dedication to creating inclusive spaces make him an invaluable voice in this discussion.

Trent Cohen, Principal Engineer, Mott MacDonald

With 16 years in civil and geotechnical engineering, Trent’s leadership within his company’s LGBTQ+ ERG, and his co-leadership of Build Out Alliance’s Professional Programming Committee in Los Angeles, make him a key contributor to discussions on inclusion and diversity in the industry.

Stephanie Gady, Graduate Sustainability Consultant, Arup

Stephanie, a recent Stanford graduate and leader of Arup's LGBTQ+ employee resource group, brings fresh insights into the challenges and opportunities of being queer in the AEC industry. Her focus on sustainability, combined with her perspective as a newcomer to the field, adds depth to the conversation on enhancing diversity.

Philip Westermann, Interior Design Lead, CRB

With 20 years of experience in interior design, Philip offers a GenX perspective on the evolution of queer identity within the industry. His commitment to inclusive design principles and his long-standing experience navigating openly gay identity enrich the panel with practical insights.

Keith Pettey, Director of Construction, UCLA Housing and Hospitality

Bringing over 40 years of construction experience and a creative approach to the industry, Keith offers a wealth of knowledge on leadership and inclusion. His involvement with Build Out since 2019 and his role in the LA chapter since 2022 make him an essential voice in discussing industry challenges.

Carlos Hurtado, Senior Project Manager, DPR Construction

With 13 years in the industry, Carlos’s dual role as an engineer and project manager, coupled with his leadership in DPR’s LGBTQIA+ ERG, positions him to address the importance of building safe and inclusive spaces. His focus on raising awareness and fostering connections ensures a meaningful contribution to the discussion.

 

About the Moderator

John Rozeluk, Principal, Buro Happold

With 20 years of experience as a Principal Mechanical Engineer and a dedicated advocate for diversity, John is well-suited to lead this discussion. As the first co-chair of his company's diversity and inclusion forum and a member of Build Out’s Professional Programming Committee, John’s deep commitment to equality and mentoring emerging professionals ensures a dynamic and insightful conversation.
