An Evening with Jane Greenwood

  • Thornton Tomasetti 120 Broadway, Floor 15 New York, NY, 10271 United States (map)

Life & Career as an Out, Gay Woman

Join Build Out Alliance for an evening with with Jane Greenwood as she speaks about her career, experiences, and what it means to be an out, gay woman in the practice of architecture. Since her start in the industry in 1990, she decided she would always make room for women, minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community throughout the design and construction field. She encourages up and coming designers to feel secure in their knowledge that who they love should be irrelevant. Hear more about her own story of coming up in the architecture profession and how she’s trail-blazed for our community.

Join us In-Person or by Video

About Jane Greenwood

Jane Greenwood is an architect, mentor and advocate. She is recognized as a leader in preservation/adaptive re-use and mixed-use master planning for urban environments. As the Managing Principal of Kostow Greenwood Architects, an award-winning, national design firm based in New York City and founded in 1987, Greenwood leads a team of architects and designers in concept design through construction for developers, corporations and institutions.

As an advocate, Greenwood continues to speak on behalf of equality in the workplace, not only for women but also for minorities and the LGBTQ+ community. Having co-founded OLGAD (Organization of Lesbian + Gay Architects and Designers) in the 1990s, Greenwood is recognized as a pioneer in the struggle for visibility in the architecture profession for under-represented individuals and their contributions, most notably leading to the formation of the New York City LGBT Historic Sites Project.

As a mentor, Greenwood is actively involved with high school, college and post-graduate students, simultaneously sparking interest in teens and guiding emerging professionals. She was invited to participate as a Mentor with the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum’s annual Teen Design Fair.

Greenwood’s awards include recognition from Crain’s New York as a “Notable Women in Construction, Design & Architecture”; BUILD magazine; HOUZZ as one of “7 Game-Changing LGBT Architects and Design Pros You Should Know”; the Women Builder’s Council; OUT magazine’s annual OUT 100, a celebration of “the most influential LGBTQ people of the year”; and from the New York Business Journal as a “Woman of Influence”.

Greenwood has delivered keynote addresses and participated in panel discussions at numerous conferences including the City of Tomorrow: Real Estate, Architecture and Design Summit at the 92Y. She is often invited to guest lecture at universities, mentor the next generation of design professionals and jury peer design competitions including the World Interiors News (WIN) Awards, World Architecture News (WAN) Awards and the inaugural Female Frontiers Awards.

Greenwood is a graduate of Pratt Institute, a member of the American Institute of Architects and a LEED Accredited Professional.
