Have you ever considered breaking away from a traditional career path, working at an established firm, to start your own practice? Our upcoming panel discussion offers invaluable insights and firsthand experiences from five queer industry professionals who have successfully founded and grown their own firms. This engaging event provides a unique opportunity to learn about the rewards and challenges of entrepreneurship as a queer professional, discover practical strategies for overcoming obstacles, and gain the inspiration needed to take the leap toward independence. Our panelists will cover topics such as overcoming initial challenges, building a support network, and strategies for long-term success. Whether you’re launching a new business, embarking on a solo project, or seeking to carve your own path in the industry, this event will provide you with the tools, insights, and confidence you need.

In-Person Registration Ends September 12

This panel event will take place in-person at Illuminations, and virtually. Advanced registration is required to attend in-person, and walk-ins will not be admitted to the event. In-person registration closes on Thursday, September 12, so be sure to sign-up before time runs out! Virtual registrations will be accepted until the time of the event start.

About Our Panelists

Ines Yupanqui (she/her)
Founder, A Space Unfolds Architecture

Inés is a queer Latina immigrant and licensed architect in New York, dedicated to creating sustainable, equitable spaces. With over a decade of experience, she founded her own studio to explore sustainable building practices and their impacts on communities. Her unique perspective on architecture's role in climate change and material health makes her a valuable voice on entrepreneurship and innovation in the field.

Kholisile Dhliwayo (he/him)
Co-Founder, afrOURban Inc.

Kholisile is an interdisciplinary creative who combines architecture with social justice. As the co-founder of afrOURban Inc., he celebrates Black spaces through art and community narratives. He leads Culture as Creative, focusing on collaborative practices that merge art, culture, and technology. His work exemplifies how architecture can drive social change, making him an inspiring speaker on founding a practice with a mission.

Daniel Elmore (he/him)
Founder, Paragon Architecture & Design

Daniel is a Registered Architect and founder of Paragon Architecture & Design. He is passionate about supporting Harlem-based BIPOC business owners and has been pivotal in helping maintain Harlem's legacy as a hub for Black-owned enterprises. His commitment to using architecture as a tool for community empowerment makes him an excellent resource for those looking to start their own firm.

Vanessa Hill (she/her)
Founder, RJH Architecture

Vanessa has built a thriving architecture practice over the past decade, focusing on projects in underserved areas. Her experience with zoning analysis and complex developments, including the renovation of a historic building in Harlem, highlights her ability to transform challenging spaces. Vanessa's journey from small projects to large-scale endeavors provides valuable insights into growing a successful practice.

Matthias Hollwich (he/him)
Founder, HWKN

Matthias is renowned for merging architectural innovation with business strategy. His firm gained prominence with a MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program win, leading to international projects. Matthias's experience in scaling a design practice and leveraging competition successes offers a compelling perspective on entrepreneurship and business growth in architecture.
