Book Club: Our First Virtual Meeting

Our Book Club is returning this month for its first virtual gathering. Continuing our strong focus on LGBTQ+ stories and authors, we will be discussing, "Detransition, Baby" by Torrey Peters. This whipsmart debut novel follows three women—transgender and cisgender—whose lives collide after an unexpected pregnancy forces them to confront their deepest desires about gender, motherhood, and sex. About This Month’s Book & Author

Detransition, Baby
by Torrey Peters

This groundbreaking novel explores themes of gender, identity, motherhood, and love. The book tells the story of three unforgettable characters: Reese, a trans woman; Ames, a detransitioned man; and Katrina, Ames's cisgender ex-girlfriend who becomes unexpectedly pregnant with Ames's child. As the three characters navigate their complex relationships and the challenges of parenthood, the novel offers a nuanced and thought-provoking exploration of contemporary LGBTQ+ experiences. 

"Detransition, Baby" was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award and the Women's Price for Fiction. It was named one of the best books of 2021 by several publications, including the New York Times, NPR, and TIME Magazine.

Torrey Peters is a highly acclaimed author and often cited as one of the most exciting voices in contemporary queer literature. She was born in Chicago and grew up in New York City, where she currently resides. Torrey is also a co-founder of the Trans Women Writers Collective, an organization that supports and promotes the work of trans women writers. She is a passionate advocate for trans rights and visibility, and her writing is known for its bold and fearless approach to exploring the complexities of gender and identity.

 

About Book Club

The Build Out Alliance book club brings members of our community together, from avid reader to short story dabbler, around many LGBTQ+ voices captured by the written word. Our meetings include open and honest conversations about each book, where we welcome all critiques and opinions. Many of these books are an opportunity to educate ourselves about queer history and identity, often linked to some of the most pressing issues we face today. Book Club's range of selections intentionally promote insight into a wide spectrum of topics, identities, and stories within the LGBTQ+ community.
